Penn’s Graduate School of Education connects hundreds of students, faculty, and resources to local Philadelphia schools and community programs to bridge educational inequality gaps.

From working within individual classrooms to powering two whole-school partnerships, Penn’s Graduate School of Education (GSE) supports the well-being and growth of K–12 students in Philadelphia.

West Philadelphia Collaborative History (WPCH), a project sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education (GSE), collects resources and stories about the history of 20th- and 21st-century West Philadelphia for the benefit of the community at large.

In early 2024, Penn’s Graduate School of Education (GSE) hosted nearly 175 local high school students at the Youth United Against Incarceration Symposium, which fostered discussions surrounding the root causes of mass incarceration and strategies to combat injustice within the criminal justice system.

A community-based research partnership invites Philadelphia community members to conduct their own research into the educational issues they face as a way of catalyzing change.

This organization, with Penn’s support, lets Philadelphia public school teachers enroll in seminars taught by university professors, then write curriculums based on their learnings.

Penn’s $4.1 million commitment supports the school’s key initiatives over the next five years. The partnership dates back more than a half-century.

The School District of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, and Penn GSE launched this model university-assisted public school in West Philly in 2001. Penn provides annual per-pupil spending support.

The SDP and Penn GSE collaborate to improve education citywide, and along with the Netter Center, maintain deep partnerships with schools in West Philly.
