Once thought of as a “streetcar suburb,” West Philadelphia saw massive growth and transformation beginning in 1907 with the introduction of the Market Street Elevated rapid transit line (“The El”). More than a century later, as an engaged member of the West Philadelphia community, Penn GSE has launched a community resource that illuminates decades worth of rich history and stories from within the area.
The WPCH is a labor of love for John Puckett, a historian, emeritus professor at Penn GSE and long-time West Philadelphia resident. As Project director, he oversees the website, contributes articles and works closely with collaborators, including West Philadelphia residents and local graduate students.
